Microsegmentation is the practice of creating secure zones in an environment, validating all traffic that is entering and leaving. As a tool, a microsegmentation product can enable the network defender to gain visibility into traffic between critical infrastructure (east-west) down to the process level. Understanding the connections that are taking place between systems and applications is invaluable to the network defender, and having the ability to create dynamic rules to allow connections to take place while blocking all others adds a layer of difficulty to an attacker in the network. In this discussion, we will explore microsegmentation and how it improves the protection and detection capabilities that the network security team are always striving to improve.
